EARLY GOLD Gold was discovered on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island in the 1860s. Fortune seekers flocked from around the globe, seeking alluvial gold; tiny grains and nuggets washed down rivers and creeks. In the hills around Reefton there was another form of gold, trapped in the solid rock and buried deep underground in rich veins.
By 1911, Martha was New Zealand's biggest gold mine and the nearby miners' town of Waihi, population 6500, the largest town in the region. Four decades later, Martha's production, after the processing of nearly 11 million t of underground ore, totalled some 5 million oz (155 t) of gold and 35 million oz (1088 t) of silver.
